What you get with the Howa Carbon Stalker 7mm PRC
The Carbon Stalker puts the Howa 1500 in a carbon fiber stock. Carbon is stiff, light and doesn’t swell with moisture the way wood can.
The 1500 action is made by Howa Machinery in Japan. It’s a two-lug, push-feed action with a one-piece bolt, and the three-position safety lets you run the bolt on safe so you can unload without firing.

Why 7mm PRC?
Hornady released the 7mm PRC in 2022. It’s a long-action magnum designed around very long, heavy 7mm bullets. It’s built for elk, mule deer and long-range shooting. It carries a lot of energy far out, so it’s a serious choice for western hunts.
Factory loads use 160 to 180 grain bullets. The 1:8 twist is fast enough for the long 175 and 180 grain bullets the round was designed for. For chamber and pressure specs, see the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard, or read the history of the 7mm PRC.
Is this the right rifle for you?
It’s for elk and mule deer hunters who want magnum power without a heavy rifle. The 24-inch barrel gets the most velocity out of the cartridge, which helps at longer range.
Picking ammunition
Start with a couple of quality factory loads and see which groups tighter. Once you find it, buy enough of the same lot to get through the season. For game, choose a bonded or controlled-expansion bullet. Practice ammo is fine for paper but not for animals.
Seasons, legal calibers and hunter education rules vary by state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page links to state wildlife agencies and public land where you can hunt.
More about the Howa Carbon Stalker
Howa’s Carbon Stalker is a lightweight magnum hunting rifle. The carbon fiber stock keeps weight down while staying stiff enough to hold zero in rough weather.
Your first range trip
Set up at 25 yards first so your first shots land on paper. Then move back to 100 yards and adjust in small steps, firing three-shot groups and letting the barrel cool between them. The 7mm PRC really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Care and storage
Store the Howa Carbon Stalker 7mm PRC unloaded, in a dry place, with the magazine out. After rain or snow, dry it off and wipe the metal down before you case it. A clean, lightly oiled bore and tight action screws are most of what keeps a Howa shooting the way it did on day one.
