What you get with the Howa Carbon Stalker 7mm PRC Kryptek
The Carbon Stalker puts the Howa 1500 in a carbon fiber stock. Carbon is stiff, light and doesn’t swell with moisture the way wood can.
Underneath it all is the Howa 1500, a Japanese-made two-lug action that’s been in production since 1979. The bolt is one piece, and the safety has three positions, the middle one letting you unload with the rifle on safe.

The 7mm PRC cartridge
Hornady released the 7mm PRC in 2022. It’s a long-action magnum designed around very long, heavy 7mm bullets. It’s built for elk, mule deer and long-range shooting. It carries a lot of energy far out, so it’s a serious choice for western hunts.
Factory loads use 160 to 180 grain bullets. The 1:8 twist is fast enough for the long 175 and 180 grain bullets the round was designed for. If you want the technical side, the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard covers chamber dimensions and pressure. Here’s the history of the 7mm PRC too.
Is this the right rifle for you?
If you hunt big country and walk a long way, the carbon stock makes a real difference by the end of the day. The 24-inch barrel gets the most velocity out of the cartridge, which helps at longer range.
Picking ammunition
Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best. For hunting, use a bullet built for the game you’re after, and save the cheap full metal jacket ammo for practice.
Before the season, check your state’s rules on legal cartridges and hunter education. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a good starting point for public land hunting and state contacts.
More about the Howa Carbon Stalker
Howa’s Carbon Stalker is a lightweight magnum hunting rifle. The carbon fiber stock keeps weight down while staying stiff enough to hold zero in rough weather.
At the range
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. The 7mm PRC really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa Carbon Stalker 7mm PRC Kryptek
You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Keep a thin coat of oil on exposed steel, especially after a wet day in the field.
