Description

Our Howa 1500 Hogue 22-250 is a Hogue bolt gun in .22-250 Remington. It comes with a 22-inch threaded barrel, a black Hogue OverMolded stock and 5-round capacity. Price is $518, and we have it in stock. It’s a solid match for varmints and coyotes.

What you get with the Howa 1500 Hogue 22-250

Howa’s Hogue rifle is the plain, dependable 1500: cold hammer-forged barrel, forged one-piece bolt, HACT two-stage trigger and a pillar-bedded Hogue OverMolded stock with a recoil pad.

Underneath it all is the Howa 1500, a Japanese-made two-lug action that’s been in production since 1979. The bolt is one piece, and the safety has three positions, the middle one letting you unload with the rifle on safe.

The HACT (Howa Actuator Controlled Trigger) is a two-stage trigger. There’s a light take-up stage, then a crisp break, which makes it easier to shoot well from field positions. The barrel is threaded 1/2×28 at the muzzle and ships with a thread protector, ready for a brake or can.

Why .22-250 Remington?

The .22-250 Remington started life as a wildcat on the .250 Savage case and became a factory round in 1965. It’s one of the fastest .22 centerfires you can buy off the shelf. Varmint hunters use it for long, flat shots at prairie dogs, groundhogs and coyotes. With light bullets it can push past 3,600 feet per second, so holdover stays small out to 300 yards and beyond.

Factory loads mostly use 35 to 55 grain bullets. The 1:12 twist is built for those lighter bullets; heavy 70-plus grain match bullets need a faster twist than this. If you want the technical side, the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard covers chamber dimensions and pressure. Here’s the history of the .22-250 Remington too.

Who this rifle is for

It’s a no-fuss hunting rifle for people who want a proven action and a stock that shrugs off weather.

Choosing .22-250 Remington ammo

Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best. For hunting, use a bullet built for the game you’re after, and save the cheap full metal jacket ammo for practice.

Before the season, check your state’s rules on legal cartridges and hunter education. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a good starting point for public land hunting and state contacts.

More about the Howa Hogue

The Hogue model pairs the Howa 1500 barreled action with a Hogue OverMolded stock. The stock is pillar-bedded, and the rubber overmold gives a soft, grippy surface that doesn’t get slick in rain or cold.

At the range

Plan a full session for the first trip. Get on paper at 25 yards, then zero at 100 and shoot a few groups so you know what the rifle and load can do. Once you’re zeroed, shoot from sitting and kneeling too, since that’s how most field shots happen.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa 1500 Hogue 22-250

You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Keep a thin coat of oil on exposed steel, especially after a wet day in the field.
