What the 6.5 Grendel is good for

It’s a capable deer round at moderate ranges and a very efficient target round, with good wind resistance for its size and light recoil. Typical bullets run from 90 to 130 grains, with 120 to 123 grain loads being the most common. A 1:8 twist handles that whole range.

SAAMI publishes the industry standard for chamber and cartridge dimensions. For history and ballistics, here’s some background on the 6.5 Grendel.

Choosing between Howa 6.5 Grendel Rifles

Howa Mini Action: it suits hunters who want a light, handy rifle for stands, blinds and short walks, and shooters who like AR-sized cartridges but prefer a bolt gun.
Howa Mini Action walnut: it’s for the hunter who likes wood and blued steel but wants a lighter rifle than a full-size bolt gun.
Howa Fence Line: it’s built for ranchers, predator hunters and anyone who keeps a rifle in the truck.
Howa Mini Excel Lite: it suits shooters who want a compact precision setup for steel, varmints or a hunting rifle that fits more than one person.

Barrel length matters too. Shorter barrels are handier in blinds and with suppressors, while 24-inch barrels squeeze out more velocity for long shots. If you want a ready-to-hunt package, look for models that include a scope.

Where to start

Howa Mini Action 6.5 Grendel Green ($518, the lowest price here): 22-inch threaded barrel and green HTI synthetic stock. If you shoot from a truck, a tree stand or a ground blind, the short action and light weight make sense. It’s also a good first centerfire for a younger shooter.

Howa Fence Line 6.5 Grendel Prairie Reaper ($604, a middle option): 22-inch threaded barrel and Prairie Reaper camo synthetic stock. It’s built for ranchers, predator hunters and anyone who keeps a rifle in the truck.

Howa Mini Action 6.5 Grendel Threaded Walnut ($994, the top of the range): 20-inch threaded barrel and dark walnut stock. It’s for the hunter who likes wood and blued steel but wants a lighter rifle than a full-size bolt gun.

How shipping to your FFL works

Rifles ship to a licensed FFL dealer near you, not to your home. You’ll complete ATF Form 4473 and the background check when you pick it up. The ATF firearms Q&A covers the federal rules, and your state may add its own.
