Howa M1100 22LR Scoped Rifle

Description

The Howa M1100 22LR Scoped is a .22 Long Rifle bolt action rifle with an 18-inch threaded barrel, a black synthetic stock and 10-round capacity. A 4-12x40mm riflescope comes with it. It sells for $259, and it’s in stock. Most buyers pick it for small game and targets.

What you get with the Howa M1100 22LR Scoped

Howa built the M1100 as a rimfire trainer and small-game rifle that handles like its centerfire rifles. It’s short, light and runs from 10-round magazines.

The 1/2×28 thread on the muzzle is the common pitch for .22 rimfire muzzle devices and suppressors, so finding something that fits is easy. A .22LR with a can and standard-velocity ammo is about as quiet as shooting gets, which makes it a good backyard-range and pest-control rifle where that’s legal. The synthetic stock doesn’t mind rain, and the oversized bolt handle is easy to work with gloves on.

The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28, so you can fit a brake, flash hider or suppressor where your state allows it.

What the .22 Long Rifle is good for

The .22 Long Rifle dates back to 1887 and is still the most-fired cartridge in the world. It’s a rimfire round, so the priming compound sits in the rim of the case and there’s nothing to reload. It’s the round for plinking, squirrels, rabbits and teaching new shooters. Recoil is close to nothing and the report is mild, so you can shoot a few hundred rounds in an afternoon without a sore shoulder.

Most loads use 36 to 40 grain bullets, from standard-velocity target ammo to high-velocity hunting rounds. Ammo is cheap and on every store shelf, which is half the appeal. If you want the technical side, the SAAMI rimfire standard covers chamber dimensions and pressure. Here’s the history of the .22 Long Rifle too.

The included scope

This rifle comes with a 4-12x40mm riflescope. That’s a sensible hunting range of magnification. Keep it low in the woods and turn it up for longer field shots. Before the first hunt, check the ring screws, then zero at 100 yards with the ammo you plan to hunt with.

Who this rifle is for

It also works as a cheap trainer for centerfire shooters, since the handling is similar to a full-size bolt gun. The short barrel keeps it handy in vehicles and blinds, and it’s well suited to a suppressor.

Best .22 Long Rifle loads for this rifle

Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best.

Your first range trip

Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. Most .22 Long Rifle shooting happens inside 200 yards, so confirm your zero at 50 and 100 and learn where it hits at 150.

Setting up your Howa M1100 22LR Scoped

Before you shoot it, run a patch through the bore to clear out any shipping oil and check that the action screws are snug. The scope is already mounted, so check the ring screws with a torque driver before you zero. Zero at 100 yards, then check where your load lands at the distances you actually shoot.
