Howa APC 6.5 Creedmoor Gray Flag Threaded features
The APC is Howa’s full precision rifle. The 1500 action sits in an aluminum chassis with a 6-position Luth-AR MBA-4 buttstock, so you can set length of pull and cheek height for prone or bench work.
The 1500 action is the reason Howa has such a following. It’s simple, strong and made in Japan, with a one-piece two-lug bolt and a three-position safety you can unload on.
The barrel is threaded at the muzzle and ships with a thread protector, ready for a brake or can. The Luth-AR stock adjusts for length of pull and cheek height, so you can get a straight line of sight through the scope.

The scope on the Howa APC 6.5 Creedmoor Gray Flag Threaded
This rifle comes with a Nikko Stirling 4-16x50mm scope. 4 to 16 power with a 50mm objective gives you enough magnification for steel at distance and a bright picture at dawn and dusk. Plan on a box of ammo to zero it and confirm your holds before the season.
What the 6.5 Creedmoor is good for
Hornady introduced the 6.5 Creedmoor in 2007 as a match cartridge. It caught on with hunters too, and it’s now one of the best-selling rifle rounds in the US. It fires long, high-BC bullets that hold their speed and resist wind, so it’s popular for target shooting from 300 to 1,000 yards. With the right bullet it’s a proven deer and black bear round, and recoil is noticeably lighter than a .308.
Factory loads usually run 120 to 147 grains. The standard 1:8 twist stabilizes the long 140 and 147 grain match bullets as well as lighter hunting bullets. SAAMI sets the industry dimensions for this round; the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard lists them. There’s also a good summary of the history of the 6.5 Creedmoor.
Is this the right rifle for you?
If your goal is consistent hits on steel at 600 yards and beyond, this is the kind of rifle you want. The 24-inch barrel gets the most velocity out of the cartridge, which helps at longer range.
Picking ammunition
Try a few factory loads before you settle on one. Barrels have preferences, and a 20-minute test at the range tells you which load to buy in bulk. When you hunt with it, zero with the exact hunting load you’ll carry, since a different bullet can land an inch or two away at 100 yards.
Hunting rules are set state by state. Start at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page for federal lands, then check your state agency for seasons and caliber limits.
At the range
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. The 6.5 Creedmoor really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa APC 6.5 Creedmoor Gray Flag Threaded
You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Keep a thin coat of oil on exposed steel, especially after a wet day in the field.
