Inside the Howa Gamepro 2 7mm-08 Brown
Howa’s Gamepro 2 package bundles the 1500 action, a pillar-bedded Hogue OverMolded stock and a mounted Nikko Stirling scope. It’s aimed at hunters who want one purchase and a short trip to the range.
The 1500 action is made by Howa Machinery in Japan. It’s a two-lug, push-feed action with a one-piece bolt, and the three-position safety lets you run the bolt on safe so you can unload without firing.
The HACT (Howa Actuator Controlled Trigger) is a two-stage trigger. There’s a light take-up stage, then a crisp break, which makes it easier to shoot well from field positions.
The 7mm-08 Remington cartridge
Remington made the 7mm-08 a factory round in 1980 by necking the .308 Winchester case to 7mm. It fits short actions and recoils less than a .308. It’s a very efficient deer cartridge. It’s mild enough for new hunters, but with 140 to 150 grain bullets it will take deer, black bear and pronghorn cleanly.
Common loads use 120 to 150 grain bullets. A 1:9.5 or 1:10 twist stabilizes all of them. SAAMI sets the industry dimensions for this round; the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard lists them. There’s also a good summary of the history of the 7mm-08 Remington.
The scope on the Howa Gamepro 2 7mm-08 Brown
This rifle comes with a Nikko Stirling GamePro 3.5-10x44mm scope. 3.5 to 10 power is about right for deer hunting: wide enough at the bottom for close shots and enough magnification for longer ones. Zero it at 100 yards with your hunting load and confirm at the distance you expect to shoot.

Who this rifle is for
It suits first-time buyers and anyone who wants a matched rifle and scope at a fair price.
Choosing 7mm-08 Remington ammo
Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best. Hunting loads cost more, but they’re made to expand and hold together on game. Use them in the field and cheaper ammo for practice.
Hunting rules are set state by state. Start at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page for federal lands, then check your state agency for seasons and caliber limits.
Getting it zeroed
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. Once you’re zeroed, shoot from sitting and kneeling too, since that’s how most field shots happen.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa Gamepro 2 7mm-08 Brown
You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Keep a thin coat of oil on exposed steel, especially after a wet day in the field.
