Description
The Howa Mini Hunter 223 Rem is a .223 Remington bolt action rifle with a 22-inch threaded barrel, a walnut stock and 5-round capacity. Price is $601, and we have it in stock. Most buyers pick it for varmints, coyotes and targets.
Inside the Howa Mini Hunter 223 Rem
This is the Mini Action in a walnut stock. You get the short, light action built for AR-sized cartridges, with its shorter bolt throw, set in wood instead of synthetic.
Every Howa 1500 starts with a forged and machined receiver and a one-piece bolt with two lugs. The three-position safety has a middle setting that lets you work the bolt to unload while the rifle stays on safe.
It has a two-stage trigger with a short first stage and a clean break. The barrel is threaded at the muzzle and ships with a thread protector, ready for a brake or can.

What the .223 Remington is good for
The .223 Remington went commercial in 1964 and shares its case shape with the 5.56x45mm NATO. It’s a small, fast .22 caliber centerfire with very light recoil. It’s a varmint and predator round first: prairie dogs, groundhogs and coyotes out to a few hundred yards. It’s also a cheap way to practice field shooting from a bolt gun.
Bullets run from about 40 to 77 grains. A 1:8 twist handles the heavier 69 to 77 grain match bullets as well as the lighter varmint loads. Fire .223 Remington ammunition in a .223 chamber; SAAMI lists 5.56 NATO in a .223 Remington chamber as an unsafe combination. SAAMI sets the industry dimensions for this round; the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard lists them. There’s also a good summary of the history of the .223 Remington.
Who should buy it
Think of it as a classic deer rifle scaled down. It’s quick to the shoulder in brush and easy to carry on a long sit.
Picking ammunition
Try a few factory loads before you settle on one. Barrels have preferences, and a 20-minute test at the range tells you which load to buy in bulk. When you hunt with it, zero with the exact hunting load you’ll carry, since a different bullet can land an inch or two away at 100 yards.
Seasons, legal calibers and hunter education rules vary by state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page links to state wildlife agencies and public land where you can hunt.
More about the Howa Mini Action walnut
Howa’s Mini Action is about 12 percent shorter than a standard short action. Put it in a walnut stock and you get a light, traditional-looking hunting rifle that still runs modern cartridges.
At the range
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. Once you’re zeroed, shoot from sitting and kneeling too, since that’s how most field shots happen.

Care and storage
