Description
The Howa Mini Hunter 6mm ARC is Howa’s Mini Action walnut rifle chambered in 6mm ARC, built with a 22-inch threaded barrel, a walnut stock and 5-round capacity. It sells for $608, and it’s in stock. Most buyers pick it for deer, pronghorn and long-range targets.
Howa Mini Hunter 6mm ARC features
This is the Mini Action in a walnut stock. You get the short, light action built for AR-sized cartridges, with its shorter bolt throw, set in wood instead of synthetic.
Underneath it all is the Howa 1500, a Japanese-made two-lug action that’s been in production since 1979. The bolt is one piece, and the safety has three positions, the middle one letting you unload with the rifle on safe.
The two-stage match trigger takes up a short, light first stage and then breaks cleanly, which helps when you’re squeezing off a careful shot. A threaded muzzle means you can add a muzzle brake or a suppressor later where local law allows.

What the 6mm ARC is good for
Hornady designed the 6mm ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge) and released it in 2020. It’s based on the 6.5 Grendel case necked to 6mm and fits AR-15 length magazines. It gives long-range performance from a short, light action. Shooters use it for steel out past 800 yards, and with good hunting bullets it handles deer and pronghorn at sensible distances.
Factory loads use 103 to 108 grain high-BC bullets for target work and lighter bullets for hunting. A fast twist like 1:7.5 is what those long bullets need. SAAMI sets the industry dimensions for this round; the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard lists them. There’s also a good summary of the history of the 6mm ARC.
Who this rifle is for
Think of it as a classic deer rifle scaled down. It’s quick to the shoulder in brush and easy to carry on a long sit.
Best 6mm ARC loads for this rifle
Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best. For hunting, use a bullet built for the game you’re after, and save the cheap full metal jacket ammo for practice.
Seasons, legal calibers and hunter education rules vary by state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page links to state wildlife agencies and public land where you can hunt.
More about the Howa Mini Action walnut
Howa’s Mini Action is about 12 percent shorter than a standard short action. Put it in a walnut stock and you get a light, traditional-looking hunting rifle that still runs modern cartridges.
At the range
Plan a full session for the first trip. Get on paper at 25 yards, then zero at 100 and shoot a few groups so you know what the rifle and load can do. The 6mm ARC really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Care and storage
Store the Howa Mini Hunter 6mm ARC unloaded, in a dry place, with the magazine out. After rain or snow, dry it off and wipe the metal down before you case it. A clean, lightly oiled bore and tight action screws are most of what keeps a Howa shooting the way it did on day one.
