Inside the Howa Mini Action 6mm ARC Threaded Walnut
Howa’s Mini Action is about 12 percent shorter than a standard short action. Put it in a walnut stock and you get a light, traditional-looking hunting rifle that still runs modern cartridges.
The 1500 action is made by Howa Machinery in Japan. It’s a two-lug, push-feed action with a one-piece bolt, and the three-position safety lets you run the bolt on safe so you can unload without firing.
A threaded muzzle means you can add a muzzle brake or a suppressor later where local law allows.

Why 6mm ARC?
Hornady designed the 6mm ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge) and released it in 2020. It’s based on the 6.5 Grendel case necked to 6mm and fits AR-15 length magazines. It gives long-range performance from a short, light action. Shooters use it for steel out past 800 yards, and with good hunting bullets it handles deer and pronghorn at sensible distances.
Factory loads use 103 to 108 grain high-BC bullets for target work and lighter bullets for hunting. A fast twist like 1:7.5 is what those long bullets need. For chamber and pressure specs, see the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard, or read the history of the 6mm ARC.
Who this rifle is for
It’s for the hunter who likes wood and blued steel but wants a lighter rifle than a full-size bolt gun. A 20-inch barrel keeps the rifle short and balanced without giving up much velocity.
Picking ammunition
Try a few factory loads before you settle on one. Barrels have preferences, and a 20-minute test at the range tells you which load to buy in bulk. When you hunt with it, zero with the exact hunting load you’ll carry, since a different bullet can land an inch or two away at 100 yards.
Hunting rules are set state by state. Start at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page for federal lands, then check your state agency for seasons and caliber limits.
More about the Howa Mini Action walnut
This is the Mini Action in a walnut stock. You get the short, light action built for AR-sized cartridges, with its shorter bolt throw, set in wood instead of synthetic.
Your first range trip
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. The 6mm ARC really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa Mini Action 6mm ARC Threaded Walnut
You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Wipe the wood with a light coat of oil now and then to keep it from drying out.
