Description

The Howa 1500 Hogue 30-06 is a .30-06 Springfield bolt action rifle with a 22-inch barrel, a black Hogue OverMolded stock and 4-round capacity. It sells for $542, and it’s in stock. If you want one rifle for deer, elk and moose, this is a good place to start.

Inside the Howa 1500 Hogue 30-06

The Hogue model pairs the Howa 1500 barreled action with a Hogue OverMolded stock. The stock is pillar-bedded, and the rubber overmold gives a soft, grippy surface that doesn’t get slick in rain or cold.

The 1500 action is the reason Howa has such a following. It’s simple, strong and made in Japan, with a one-piece two-lug bolt and a three-position safety you can unload on.

The HACT (Howa Actuator Controlled Trigger) is a two-stage trigger. There’s a light take-up stage, then a crisp break, which makes it easier to shoot well from field positions.

The .30-06 Springfield cartridge

The .30-06 Springfield was adopted by the US Army in 1906 and served through two world wars. Hunters have trusted it for over a century. It’s one of the most versatile rounds in North America. With 150 grain bullets it’s a deer rifle, and with 180 to 220 grain bullets it’s an elk and moose rifle.

Factory ammo runs from 125 to 220 grains and you’ll find it nearly everywhere. The 1:10 twist covers that full range. If you want the technical side, the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard covers chamber dimensions and pressure. Here’s the history of the .30-06 Springfield too.

Who this rifle is for

It’s a no-fuss hunting rifle for people who want a proven action and a stock that shrugs off weather.

Choosing .30-06 Springfield ammo

Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best. For hunting, use a bullet built for the game you’re after, and save the cheap full metal jacket ammo for practice.

Seasons, legal calibers and hunter education rules vary by state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page links to state wildlife agencies and public land where you can hunt.

More about the Howa Hogue

Howa’s Hogue rifle is the plain, dependable 1500: cold hammer-forged barrel, forged one-piece bolt, HACT two-stage trigger and a pillar-bedded Hogue OverMolded stock with a recoil pad.

Getting it zeroed

Set up at 25 yards first so your first shots land on paper. Then move back to 100 yards and adjust in small steps, firing three-shot groups and letting the barrel cool between them. Once you’re zeroed, shoot from sitting and kneeling too, since that’s how most field shots happen.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa 1500 Hogue 30-06

You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Keep a thin coat of oil on exposed steel, especially after a wet day in the field.
