Description
Our Howa 1500 Hogue 270 Win is a Hogue bolt gun in .270 Winchester. It comes with a 22-inch threaded barrel, a black Hogue OverMolded stock and 5-round capacity. It sells for $542, and it’s in stock. Most buyers pick it for deer, pronghorn and sheep.
Howa 1500 Hogue 270 Win features
The Hogue model pairs the Howa 1500 barreled action with a Hogue OverMolded stock. The stock is pillar-bedded, and the rubber overmold gives a soft, grippy surface that doesn’t get slick in rain or cold.
The 1500 action is made by Howa Machinery in Japan. It’s a two-lug, push-feed action with a one-piece bolt, and the three-position safety lets you run the bolt on safe so you can unload without firing.
The HACT (Howa Actuator Controlled Trigger) is a two-stage trigger. There’s a light take-up stage, then a crisp break, which makes it easier to shoot well from field positions. The muzzle is threaded, so you can fit a brake, flash hider or suppressor where your state allows it.
What the .270 Winchester is good for
The .270 Winchester arrived in 1925 on a necked-down .30-06 case. Writer Jack O’Connor spent decades praising it, and it’s still a staple deer and sheep round. It’s flat-shooting and hits hard enough for deer, pronghorn, sheep and, with good bullets, elk at reasonable range.
Bullets run from 130 to 150 grains, with 130 grain loads the classic choice. The 1:10 twist handles all common factory loads. If you want the technical side, the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard covers chamber dimensions and pressure. Here’s the history of the .270 Winchester too.

Is this the right rifle for you?
It’s a no-fuss hunting rifle for people who want a proven action and a stock that shrugs off weather.
Choosing .270 Winchester ammo
Try a few factory loads before you settle on one. Barrels have preferences, and a 20-minute test at the range tells you which load to buy in bulk. Hunting loads cost more, but they’re made to expand and hold together on game. Use them in the field and cheaper ammo for practice.
Before the season, check your state’s rules on legal cartridges and hunter education. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a good starting point for public land hunting and state contacts.
More about the Howa Hogue
Howa’s Hogue rifle is the plain, dependable 1500: cold hammer-forged barrel, forged one-piece bolt, HACT two-stage trigger and a pillar-bedded Hogue OverMolded stock with a recoil pad.
At the range
Set up at 25 yards first so your first shots land on paper. Then move back to 100 yards and adjust in small steps, firing three-shot groups and letting the barrel cool between them. Once you’re zeroed, shoot from sitting and kneeling too, since that’s how most field shots happen.

Setting up your Howa 1500 Hogue 270 Win
Before you shoot it, run a patch through the bore to clear out any shipping oil and check that the action screws are snug. Pick rings or a base that suit the scope you plan to run, and use a torque driver on the ring screws. Zero at 100 yards, then check where your load lands at the distances you actually shoot.
