The Howa Walnut Hunter 22-250 is Howa’s Hunter rifle chambered in .22-250 Remington, built with a 22-inch threaded barrel, a walnut stock and 5-round capacity. It sells for $613, and it’s in stock. If you want one rifle for varmints and coyotes, this is a good place to start.

What you get with the Howa Walnut Hunter 22-250

Howa’s walnut-stocked Hunter rifles keep things simple. You get the 1500 action, a hammer-forged barrel and a good-looking wood stock that most hunters still prefer.

The 1500 action is made by Howa Machinery in Japan. It’s a two-lug, push-feed action with a one-piece bolt, and the three-position safety lets you run the bolt on safe so you can unload without firing.

The muzzle is threaded, so you can fit a brake, flash hider or suppressor where your state allows it.

Why .22-250 Remington?

The .22-250 Remington started life as a wildcat on the .250 Savage case and became a factory round in 1965. It’s one of the fastest .22 centerfires you can buy off the shelf. Varmint hunters use it for long, flat shots at prairie dogs, groundhogs and coyotes. With light bullets it can push past 3,600 feet per second, so holdover stays small out to 300 yards and beyond.

Factory loads mostly use 35 to 55 grain bullets. The 1:12 twist is built for those lighter bullets; heavy 70-plus grain match bullets need a faster twist than this. For chamber and pressure specs, see the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard, or read the history of the .22-250 Remington.

Is this the right rifle for you?

If you like the look and feel of walnut and want a rifle to hand down, this is a good pick.

Choosing .22-250 Remington ammo

Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best. Hunting loads cost more, but they’re made to expand and hold together on game. Use them in the field and cheaper ammo for practice.

Before the season, check your state’s rules on legal cartridges and hunter education. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a good starting point for public land hunting and state contacts.

More about the Howa Hunter

This is the classic Howa 1500: blued steel and a walnut stock. It’s a traditional hunting rifle built on the same action Howa uses across the 1500 line.

At the range

Set up at 25 yards first so your first shots land on paper. Then move back to 100 yards and adjust in small steps, firing three-shot groups and letting the barrel cool between them. Once you’re zeroed, shoot from sitting and kneeling too, since that’s how most field shots happen.

Care and storage

Keep the Howa Walnut Hunter 22-250 unloaded and stored somewhere dry. Don’t leave it in a soft case after a wet hunt; let it dry out, oil the metal lightly and check the action screws now and then.
