Description
The Howa 1500 Standard Hunter 7mm-08 is Howa’s Hunter rifle chambered in 7mm-08 Remington, built with a 22-inch threaded barrel, a walnut stock and 5-round capacity. Price is $613, and we have it in stock. If you want one rifle for deer, black bear and pronghorn, this is a good place to start.
Howa 1500 Standard Hunter 7mm-08 features
Howa’s walnut-stocked Hunter rifles keep things simple. You get the 1500 action, a hammer-forged barrel and a good-looking wood stock that most hunters still prefer.
The 1500 action is made by Howa Machinery in Japan. It’s a two-lug, push-feed action with a one-piece bolt, and the three-position safety lets you run the bolt on safe so you can unload without firing.
The muzzle is threaded, so you can fit a brake, flash hider or suppressor where your state allows it. Howa backs this rifle with a sub-MOA accuracy guarantee: three shots inside an inch at 100 yards with quality ammunition.
Why 7mm-08 Remington?
Remington made the 7mm-08 a factory round in 1980 by necking the .308 Winchester case to 7mm. It fits short actions and recoils less than a .308. It’s a very efficient deer cartridge. It’s mild enough for new hunters, but with 140 to 150 grain bullets it will take deer, black bear and pronghorn cleanly.
Common loads use 120 to 150 grain bullets. A 1:9.5 or 1:10 twist stabilizes all of them. If you want the technical side, the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard covers chamber dimensions and pressure. Here’s the history of the 7mm-08 Remington too.

Choosing 7mm-08 Remington ammo
Start with a couple of quality factory loads and see which groups tighter. Once you find it, buy enough of the same lot to get through the season. For hunting, use a bullet built for the game you’re after, and save the cheap full metal jacket ammo for practice.
Seasons, legal calibers and hunter education rules vary by state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page links to state wildlife agencies and public land where you can hunt.
More about the Howa Hunter
This is the classic Howa 1500: blued steel and a walnut stock. It’s a traditional hunting rifle built on the same action Howa uses across the 1500 line.
At the range
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. Once you’re zeroed, shoot from sitting and kneeling too, since that’s how most field shots happen.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa 1500 Standard Hunter 7mm-08
You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Wipe the wood with a light coat of oil now and then to keep it from drying out.
