Description

The Howa Superlite 6.5 Creedmoor Kryptek is a 6.5 Creedmoor bolt action rifle with a 20-inch barrel, a carbon fiber stock in Kryptek Obskura camo and 3-round capacity. It’s priced at $1,093 and in stock now. It’s a solid match for deer, black bear and long-range targets.

Inside the Howa Superlite 6.5 Creedmoor Kryptek

The Superlite is Howa’s lightweight mountain rifle. The action and barrel are trimmed for weight, and the carbon fiber stock keeps the whole rifle easy to carry on long climbs.

The 1500 action is the reason Howa has such a following. It’s simple, strong and made in Japan, with a one-piece two-lug bolt and a three-position safety you can unload on.

What the 6.5 Creedmoor is good for

Hornady introduced the 6.5 Creedmoor in 2007 as a match cartridge. It caught on with hunters too, and it’s now one of the best-selling rifle rounds in the US. It fires long, high-BC bullets that hold their speed and resist wind, so it’s popular for target shooting from 300 to 1,000 yards. With the right bullet it’s a proven deer and black bear round, and recoil is noticeably lighter than a .308.

Factory loads usually run 120 to 147 grains. The standard 1:8 twist stabilizes the long 140 and 147 grain match bullets as well as lighter hunting bullets. For chamber and pressure specs, see the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard, or read the history of the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Who this rifle is for

If your hunts involve long hikes or steep climbs, a lighter rifle is easier to carry, and that matters on the last mile. A 20-inch barrel keeps the rifle short and balanced without giving up much velocity.

Picking ammunition

Try a few factory loads before you settle on one. Barrels have preferences, and a 20-minute test at the range tells you which load to buy in bulk. Hunting loads cost more, but they’re made to expand and hold together on game. Use them in the field and cheaper ammo for practice.

Hunting rules are set state by state. Start at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page for federal lands, then check your state agency for seasons and caliber limits.

More about the Howa Superlite

Howa’s Superlite is made for hunters who walk a lot. A carbon fiber stock and a slimmed 1500 action keep weight down, so it’s the rifle you won’t mind carrying all day.

At the range

Plan a full session for the first trip. Get on paper at 25 yards, then zero at 100 and shoot a few groups so you know what the rifle and load can do. The 6.5 Creedmoor really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Setting up your Howa Superlite 6.5 Creedmoor Kryptek

Before you shoot it, run a patch through the bore to clear out any shipping oil and check that the action screws are snug. Pick rings or a base that suit the scope you plan to run, and use a torque driver on the ring screws. Zero at 100 yards, then check where your load lands at the distances you actually shoot.

Ordering and FFL transfer

Federal law requires rifles bought online to go through a licensed dealer. Pick an FFL near you at checkout, and we’ll ship the Howa Superlite 6.5 Creedmoor Kryptek there. You’ll complete the paperwork and background check when you pick it up. The ATF questions and answers page covers federal transfer rules. Some states and cities add waiting periods or other limits.
