Inside the Howa Fence Line 300 Blackout Prairie Reaper

The Fence Line series is the Howa 1500 dressed for the field. The barreled action gets a Cerakote finish, the synthetic stock comes in camo, and the threaded barrel ships with a muzzle brake.

Howa Machinery has built the 1500 action in Japan since 1979. It uses a one-piece bolt with two locking lugs and a 90-degree lift, plus a three-position safety. The middle position lets you cycle the bolt and unload with the safety on.

The HACT (Howa Actuator Controlled Trigger) is a two-stage trigger. There’s a light take-up stage, then a crisp break, which makes it easier to shoot well from field positions. The barrel is threaded 1/2×28 at the muzzle and ships with a thread protector, ready for a brake or can. It ships with a muzzle brake installed, which noticeably cuts felt recoil and muzzle rise.

Why .300 Blackout?

The .300 AAC Blackout was developed by Advanced Armament Corp. and standardized through SAAMI in 2011. It fits a .30 caliber bullet on a shortened .223 case. It works best from short barrels and suppressors. Supersonic loads handle deer and hogs at close range, and subsonic loads with a can are very quiet.

Supersonic loads use 110 to 125 grain bullets and subsonic loads use 190 to 220 grain bullets. If you want the technical side, the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard covers chamber dimensions and pressure. Here’s the history of the .300 Blackout too.

Who should buy it

If your rifle rides in a truck, gets rained on and leans against fence posts, the Cerakote and camo stock are made for that life. The short barrel keeps it handy in vehicles and blinds, and it’s well suited to a suppressor.

Choosing .300 Blackout ammo

Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best. For game, choose a bonded or controlled-expansion bullet. Practice ammo is fine for paper but not for animals.

Hunting rules are set state by state. Start at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page for federal lands, then check your state agency for seasons and caliber limits.

At the range

Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. Most .300 Blackout shooting happens inside 200 yards, so confirm your zero at 50 and 100 and learn where it hits at 150.

Setting up your Howa Fence Line 300 Blackout Prairie Reaper

Before you shoot it, run a patch through the bore to clear out any shipping oil and check that the action screws are snug. Pick rings or a base that suit the scope you plan to run, and use a torque driver on the ring screws. Zero at 100 yards, then check where your load lands at the distances you actually shoot.

Ordering and FFL transfer

Federal law requires rifles bought online to go through a licensed dealer. Pick an FFL near you at checkout, and we’ll ship the Howa Fence Line 300 Blackout Prairie Reaper there. You’ll complete the paperwork and background check when you pick it up. The ATF questions and answers page covers federal transfer rules. Some states and cities add waiting periods or other limits.
