Description
The Howa APC 308 Win is a .308 Winchester bolt action rifle with a 24-inch barrel, a APC aluminum chassis and 10-round capacity. A Nikko Stirling 4-16x50mm scope comes with it. It sells for $1,498, and it’s in stock. If you want one rifle for deer, hogs, black bear and targets, this is a good place to start.
Howa APC 308 Win features
The APC is Howa’s full precision rifle. The 1500 action sits in an aluminum chassis with a 6-position Luth-AR MBA-4 buttstock, so you can set length of pull and cheek height for prone or bench work.
Howa Machinery has built the 1500 action in Japan since 1979. It uses a one-piece bolt with two locking lugs and a 90-degree lift, plus a three-position safety. The middle position lets you cycle the bolt and unload with the safety on.
The Luth-AR stock adjusts for length of pull and cheek height, so you can get a straight line of sight through the scope.

The scope on the Howa APC 308 Win
This rifle comes with a Nikko Stirling 4-16x50mm scope. 4 to 16 power with a 50mm objective gives you enough magnification for steel at distance and a bright picture at dawn and dusk. Before the first hunt, check the ring screws, then zero at 100 yards with the ammo you plan to hunt with.
The .308 Winchester cartridge
The .308 Winchester came out in 1952 as the commercial version of what became the 7.62x51mm NATO. It’s one of the most common big-game and target rounds in the world. It handles deer, hogs, black bear and, with good bullets, elk at moderate range. It’s also a classic target round, and ammo is easy to find in almost any store.
Factory loads run from 125 to 180 grains, with 150, 165, 168 and 175 grain bullets the most common. The 1:10 twist handles all of them. For chamber and pressure specs, see the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard, or read the history of the .308 Winchester.
Who this rifle is for
If your goal is consistent hits on steel at 600 yards and beyond, this is the kind of rifle you want. The 24-inch barrel gets the most velocity out of the cartridge, which helps at longer range.
Choosing .308 Winchester ammo
Try a few factory loads before you settle on one. Barrels have preferences, and a 20-minute test at the range tells you which load to buy in bulk. Hunting loads cost more, but they’re made to expand and hold together on game. Use them in the field and cheaper ammo for practice.
Before the season, check your state’s rules on legal cartridges and hunter education. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a good starting point for public land hunting and state contacts.
At the range
Plan a full session for the first trip. Get on paper at 25 yards, then zero at 100 and shoot a few groups so you know what the rifle and load can do. The .308 Winchester really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Care and storage
Wipe down the Howa APC 308 Win after every outing, more so after rain. A safe or cabinet with a dehumidifier keeps rust away, and a quick check of the action screws each season keeps your zero where you left it.
