Description

The Howa Mini Excel Lite 223 Rem is a .223 Remington bolt action rifle with a 20-inch threaded barrel, a adjustable Luth-AR stock and 5-round capacity. A factory riflescope comes with it. Price is $819, and we have it in stock. It’s a solid match for varmints, coyotes and targets.

Howa Mini Excel Lite 223 Rem features

The Mini Excel Lite puts the Mini Action in a lightweight chassis-style setup with an adjustable Luth-AR stock and an American Flag Cerakote finish on the receiver.

Howa Machinery has built the 1500 action in Japan since 1979. It uses a one-piece bolt with two locking lugs and a 90-degree lift, plus a three-position safety. The middle position lets you cycle the bolt and unload with the safety on.

The two-stage match trigger takes up a short, light first stage and then breaks cleanly, which helps when you’re squeezing off a careful shot. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28, so you can fit a brake, flash hider or suppressor where your state allows it. The Luth-AR stock adjusts for length of pull and cheek height, so you can get a straight line of sight through the scope. The heavy barrel profile holds heat better and keeps groups steadier through longer strings than a sporter barrel.

Howa Mini Excel Lite 223 Rem optic

This rifle comes with a factory riflescope. It’s mounted from the factory, so you only need to zero it. Plan on a box of ammo to zero it and confirm your holds before the season.

Why .223 Remington?

The .223 Remington went commercial in 1964 and shares its case shape with the 5.56x45mm NATO. It’s a small, fast .22 caliber centerfire with very light recoil. It’s a varmint and predator round first: prairie dogs, groundhogs and coyotes out to a few hundred yards. It’s also a cheap way to practice field shooting from a bolt gun.

Bullets run from about 40 to 77 grains. A 1:8 twist handles the heavier 69 to 77 grain match bullets as well as the lighter varmint loads. Fire .223 Remington ammunition in a .223 chamber; SAAMI lists 5.56 NATO in a .223 Remington chamber as an unsafe combination. SAAMI sets the industry dimensions for this round; the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard lists them. There’s also a good summary of the history of the .223 Remington.

Who this rifle is for

It suits shooters who want a compact precision setup for steel, varmints or a hunting rifle that fits more than one person. A 20-inch barrel keeps the rifle short and balanced without giving up much velocity.

Choosing .223 Remington ammo

Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best. For game, choose a bonded or controlled-expansion bullet. Practice ammo is fine for paper but not for animals.

Seasons, legal calibers and hunter education rules vary by state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page links to state wildlife agencies and public land where you can hunt.

Getting it zeroed

Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. Once you’re zeroed, shoot from sitting and kneeling too, since that’s how most field shots happen.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa Mini Excel Lite 223 Rem

You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Keep a thin coat of oil on exposed steel, especially after a wet day in the field.
