Howa Mini Action ORYX 7.62×39 features
The ORYX chassis turns the compact Mini Action into a small precision rifle with a vertical grip and a stiff, free-floated setup.
The 1500 action is made by Howa Machinery in Japan. It’s a two-lug, push-feed action with a one-piece bolt, and the three-position safety lets you run the bolt on safe so you can unload without firing.

What the 7.62x39mm is good for
The 7.62x39mm is a Soviet cartridge from 1943 and the round the AK family made famous. Surplus and imported ammo kept it cheap for decades. Inside 200 yards it’s a good deer and hog round, and recoil is mild. It’s also inexpensive to practice with, which is a big reason people want it in a bolt gun.
Most loads use 120 to 125 grain bullets. Expect most ammo to use .311 diameter bullets, and pick soft points or expanding bullets for hunting. For chamber and pressure specs, see the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard, or read the history of the 7.62x39mm.
Is this the right rifle for you?
It suits someone who wants chassis features without moving up to a big, heavy precision rifle. A 20-inch barrel keeps the rifle short and balanced without giving up much velocity.
Best 7.62x39mm loads for this rifle
Try a few factory loads before you settle on one. Barrels have preferences, and a 20-minute test at the range tells you which load to buy in bulk. For hunting, use a bullet built for the game you’re after, and save the cheap full metal jacket ammo for practice.
Seasons, legal calibers and hunter education rules vary by state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page links to state wildlife agencies and public land where you can hunt.
More about the Howa Mini Action ORYX
This version sets the Mini Action in an ORYX chassis. A chassis gives the action a rigid, consistent bedding surface, and it accepts the usual accessories like bipods and rear bags.
Your first range trip
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. Most 7.62x39mm shooting happens inside 200 yards, so confirm your zero at 50 and 100 and learn where it hits at 150.

Care and storage
Store the Howa Mini Action ORYX 7.62×39 unloaded, in a dry place, with the magazine out. After rain or snow, dry it off and wipe the metal down before you case it. A clean, lightly oiled bore and tight action screws are most of what keeps a Howa shooting the way it did on day one.
