Description
The Howa Mini Action 7.62×39 Kryptek is a 7.62x39mm bolt action rifle with a 22-inch barrel, a carbon fiber stock with Kryptek Altitude camo webbing and 5-round capacity. It sells for $1,093, and it’s in stock. If you want one rifle for deer, hogs and targets, this is a good place to start.
Inside the Howa Mini Action 7.62×39 Kryptek
Howa built the Mini Action around cartridges like the .223, 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC and 7.62×39. Shrinking the action to fit those rounds cuts weight and bolt travel, and it feeds from a detachable box magazine.
Underneath it all is the Howa 1500, a Japanese-made two-lug action that’s been in production since 1979. The bolt is one piece, and the safety has three positions, the middle one letting you unload with the rifle on safe.

The 7.62x39mm cartridge
The 7.62x39mm is a Soviet cartridge from 1943 and the round the AK family made famous. Surplus and imported ammo kept it cheap for decades. Inside 200 yards it’s a good deer and hog round, and recoil is mild. It’s also inexpensive to practice with, which is a big reason people want it in a bolt gun.
Most loads use 120 to 125 grain bullets. Expect most ammo to use .311 diameter bullets, and pick soft points or expanding bullets for hunting. If you want the technical side, the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard covers chamber dimensions and pressure. Here’s the history of the 7.62x39mm too.
Is this the right rifle for you?
It suits hunters who want a light, handy rifle for stands, blinds and short walks, and shooters who like AR-sized cartridges but prefer a bolt gun.
Choosing 7.62x39mm ammo
Start with a couple of quality factory loads and see which groups tighter. Once you find it, buy enough of the same lot to get through the season. When you hunt with it, zero with the exact hunting load you’ll carry, since a different bullet can land an inch or two away at 100 yards.
Seasons, legal calibers and hunter education rules vary by state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page links to state wildlife agencies and public land where you can hunt.
More about the Howa Mini Action
The Mini Action is Howa’s answer to AR-sized cartridges in a bolt gun. The action, bolt and chamber are about 12 percent shorter than a standard short action, so the bolt throw is shorter and the rifle is lighter and quicker to cycle.
At the range
Set up at 25 yards first so your first shots land on paper. Then move back to 100 yards and adjust in small steps, firing three-shot groups and letting the barrel cool between them. Most 7.62x39mm shooting happens inside 200 yards, so confirm your zero at 50 and 100 and learn where it hits at 150.
