Description
The Howa Mini Action 7.62×39 20 Inch is Howa’s Mini Action rifle chambered in 7.62x39mm, built with a 20-inch threaded barrel, a black HTI synthetic stock and 5-round capacity. Price is $542, and we have it in stock. Most buyers pick it for deer, hogs and targets.
What you get with the Howa Mini Action 7.62×39 20 Inch
Howa built the Mini Action around cartridges like the .223, 6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC and 7.62×39. Shrinking the action to fit those rounds cuts weight and bolt travel, and it feeds from a detachable box magazine.
Every Howa 1500 starts with a forged and machined receiver and a one-piece bolt with two lugs. The three-position safety has a middle setting that lets you work the bolt to unload while the rifle stays on safe.
The barrel is threaded at the muzzle and ships with a thread protector, ready for a brake or can.
What the 7.62x39mm is good for
The 7.62x39mm is a Soviet cartridge from 1943 and the round the AK family made famous. Surplus and imported ammo kept it cheap for decades. Inside 200 yards it’s a good deer and hog round, and recoil is mild. It’s also inexpensive to practice with, which is a big reason people want it in a bolt gun.
Most loads use 120 to 125 grain bullets. Expect most ammo to use .311 diameter bullets, and pick soft points or expanding bullets for hunting. SAAMI sets the industry dimensions for this round; the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard lists them. There’s also a good summary of the history of the 7.62x39mm.

Who this rifle is for
It suits hunters who want a light, handy rifle for stands, blinds and short walks, and shooters who like AR-sized cartridges but prefer a bolt gun. A 20-inch barrel keeps the rifle short and balanced without giving up much velocity.
Choosing 7.62x39mm ammo
Every rifle has loads it likes. Buy two or three different factory loads, shoot groups with each at 100 yards and stick with the one that groups best. For hunting, use a bullet built for the game you’re after, and save the cheap full metal jacket ammo for practice.
Before the season, check your state’s rules on legal cartridges and hunter education. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a good starting point for public land hunting and state contacts.
More about the Howa Mini Action
The Mini Action is Howa’s answer to AR-sized cartridges in a bolt gun. The action, bolt and chamber are about 12 percent shorter than a standard short action, so the bolt throw is shorter and the rifle is lighter and quicker to cycle.
Your first range trip
Plan a full session for the first trip. Get on paper at 25 yards, then zero at 100 and shoot a few groups so you know what the rifle and load can do. Most 7.62x39mm shooting happens inside 200 yards, so confirm your zero at 50 and 100 and learn where it hits at 150.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa Mini Action 7.62×39 20 Inch
You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Keep a thin coat of oil on exposed steel, especially after a wet day in the field.
