Description
The Howa Mini Action 22 ARC Walnut is a 22 ARC bolt action rifle with a 22-inch barrel, a dark walnut stock and 5-round capacity. It’s priced at $701 and in stock now. If you want one rifle for targets, varmints and coyotes, this is a good place to start.
What you get with the Howa Mini Action 22 ARC Walnut
Howa’s Mini Action is about 12 percent shorter than a standard short action. Put it in a walnut stock and you get a light, traditional-looking hunting rifle that still runs modern cartridges.
Every Howa 1500 starts with a forged and machined receiver and a one-piece bolt with two lugs. The three-position safety has a middle setting that lets you work the bolt to unload while the rifle stays on safe.

Why 22 ARC?
The 22 ARC is a Hornady cartridge introduced in 2023. It takes the 6mm ARC case and necks it down to .224, so it fits AR-15 length magazines and short actions. It was built to shoot heavy, high-BC .22 bullets at useful speeds, which makes it a strong pick for steel targets, PRS-style practice and varmints at distance. Recoil is about as light as centerfire gets.
Factory loads use 62 to 88 grain bullets. A fast twist like 1:7 is needed to stabilize the long heavy bullets the round was designed around. For chamber and pressure specs, see the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard.
Who should buy it
Think of it as a classic deer rifle scaled down. It’s quick to the shoulder in brush and easy to carry on a long sit.
Choosing 22 ARC ammo
Start with a couple of quality factory loads and see which groups tighter. Once you find it, buy enough of the same lot to get through the season.
More about the Howa Mini Action walnut
This is the Mini Action in a walnut stock. You get the short, light action built for AR-sized cartridges, with its shorter bolt throw, set in wood instead of synthetic.
Getting it zeroed
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. The 22 ARC really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.
