What you get with the Howa Superlite Gen2 7mm-08
The Superlite is Howa’s lightweight mountain rifle. The action and barrel are trimmed for weight, and the carbon fiber stock keeps the whole rifle easy to carry on long climbs.
Howa Machinery has built the 1500 action in Japan since 1979. It uses a one-piece bolt with two locking lugs and a 90-degree lift, plus a three-position safety. The middle position lets you cycle the bolt and unload with the safety on.
The two-stage match trigger takes up a short, light first stage and then breaks cleanly, which helps when you’re squeezing off a careful shot. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28, so you can fit a brake, flash hider or suppressor where your state allows it.

Why 7mm-08 Remington?
Remington made the 7mm-08 a factory round in 1980 by necking the .308 Winchester case to 7mm. It fits short actions and recoils less than a .308. It’s a very efficient deer cartridge. It’s mild enough for new hunters, but with 140 to 150 grain bullets it will take deer, black bear and pronghorn cleanly.
Common loads use 120 to 150 grain bullets. A 1:9.5 or 1:10 twist stabilizes all of them. For chamber and pressure specs, see the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard, or read the history of the 7mm-08 Remington.
Is this the right rifle for you?
It’s made for backcountry and mountain hunters who count every ounce. A 20-inch barrel keeps the rifle short and balanced without giving up much velocity.
Picking ammunition
Start with a couple of quality factory loads and see which groups tighter. Once you find it, buy enough of the same lot to get through the season. For hunting, use a bullet built for the game you’re after, and save the cheap full metal jacket ammo for practice.
Before the season, check your state’s rules on legal cartridges and hunter education. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a good starting point for public land hunting and state contacts.
More about the Howa Superlite
Howa’s Superlite is made for hunters who walk a lot. A carbon fiber stock and a slimmed 1500 action keep weight down, so it’s the rifle you won’t mind carrying all day.
Your first range trip
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. Once you’re zeroed, shoot from sitting and kneeling too, since that’s how most field shots happen.

Care and storage
Store the Howa Superlite Gen2 7mm-08 unloaded, in a dry place, with the magazine out. After rain or snow, dry it off and wipe the metal down before you case it. A clean, lightly oiled bore and tight action screws are most of what keeps a Howa shooting the way it did on day one.
