Howa Hera H7 6.5 Creedmoor Carbon Black features
This rifle puts the Howa 1500 action into a Hera Arms H7 chassis. The H7 is an impact-modified polymer chassis with an aluminum V-block, so the action sits in a rigid, repeatable bed.
Howa Machinery has built the 1500 action in Japan since 1979. It uses a one-piece bolt with two locking lugs and a 90-degree lift, plus a three-position safety. The middle position lets you cycle the bolt and unload with the safety on.
The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24, so you can fit a brake, flash hider or suppressor where your state allows it. The barrel is carbon fiber wrapped steel. It’s lighter than a solid steel barrel of the same contour and stays stiff, so it doesn’t walk as it heats up during a string.

Why 6.5 Creedmoor?
Hornady introduced the 6.5 Creedmoor in 2007 as a match cartridge. It caught on with hunters too, and it’s now one of the best-selling rifle rounds in the US. It fires long, high-BC bullets that hold their speed and resist wind, so it’s popular for target shooting from 300 to 1,000 yards. With the right bullet it’s a proven deer and black bear round, and recoil is noticeably lighter than a .308.
Factory loads usually run 120 to 147 grains. The standard 1:8 twist stabilizes the long 140 and 147 grain match bullets as well as lighter hunting bullets. SAAMI sets the industry dimensions for this round; the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard lists them. There’s also a good summary of the history of the 6.5 Creedmoor.
Who this rifle is for
It suits shooters who want a precision chassis feel in a rifle that’s still light enough to hunt with. The 24-inch barrel gets the most velocity out of the cartridge, which helps at longer range.
Choosing 6.5 Creedmoor ammo
Start with a couple of quality factory loads and see which groups tighter. Once you find it, buy enough of the same lot to get through the season. Hunting loads cost more, but they’re made to expand and hold together on game. Use them in the field and cheaper ammo for practice.
Hunting rules are set state by state. Start at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page for federal lands, then check your state agency for seasons and caliber limits.
Your first range trip
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. The 6.5 Creedmoor really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Breaking in and cleaning the Howa Hera H7 6.5 Creedmoor Carbon Black
You don’t need a long break-in routine. Clean the bore after the first few range sessions to get the copper out, then clean it whenever accuracy starts to drop off. Keep a thin coat of oil on exposed steel, especially after a wet day in the field.
