Description
The Howa Hera H7 308 Win Carbon Tan is a .308 Winchester bolt action rifle with a 24-inch threaded carbon fiber barrel, a tan and black Hera H7 chassis and 5-round capacity. It sells for $1,224, and it’s in stock. Most buyers pick it for deer, hogs, black bear and targets.
Inside the Howa Hera H7 308 Win Carbon Tan
This rifle puts the Howa 1500 action into a Hera Arms H7 chassis. The H7 is an impact-modified polymer chassis with an aluminum V-block, so the action sits in a rigid, repeatable bed.
The 1500 action is the reason Howa has such a following. It’s simple, strong and made in Japan, with a one-piece two-lug bolt and a three-position safety you can unload on.
A threaded muzzle (5/8×24) means you can add a muzzle brake or a suppressor later where local law allows. The barrel is carbon fiber wrapped steel. It’s lighter than a solid steel barrel of the same contour and stays stiff, so it doesn’t walk as it heats up during a string.

What the .308 Winchester is good for
The .308 Winchester came out in 1952 as the commercial version of what became the 7.62x51mm NATO. It’s one of the most common big-game and target rounds in the world. It handles deer, hogs, black bear and, with good bullets, elk at moderate range. It’s also a classic target round, and ammo is easy to find in almost any store.
Factory loads run from 125 to 180 grains, with 150, 165, 168 and 175 grain bullets the most common. The 1:10 twist handles all of them. SAAMI sets the industry dimensions for this round; the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard lists them. There’s also a good summary of the history of the .308 Winchester.
Is this the right rifle for you?
It’s a good fit for steel matches, long-range practice and hunting from a bipod or pack. The 24-inch barrel gets the most velocity out of the cartridge, which helps at longer range.
Choosing .308 Winchester ammo
Try a few factory loads before you settle on one. Barrels have preferences, and a 20-minute test at the range tells you which load to buy in bulk. For game, choose a bonded or controlled-expansion bullet. Practice ammo is fine for paper but not for animals.
Seasons, legal calibers and hunter education rules vary by state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page links to state wildlife agencies and public land where you can hunt.
More about the Howa Hera H7
The Hera H7 chassis gives the 1500 a modern precision setup: a near-vertical grip, an adjustable-style buttstock and a slotted forend for accessories, all around an aluminum V-block bedding system.
At the range
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. The .308 Winchester really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Setting up your Howa Hera H7 308 Win Carbon Tan
Before you shoot it, run a patch through the bore to clear out any shipping oil and check that the action screws are snug. Pick rings or a base that suit the scope you plan to run, and use a torque driver on the ring screws. Zero at 100 yards, then check where your load lands at the distances you actually shoot.
