The Howa Fence Line 6.5 Creedmoor Scorched Earth is a 6.5 Creedmoor bolt action rifle with a 22-inch threaded barrel, a Scorched Earth camo synthetic stock and 5-round capacity. It’s priced at $604 and in stock now. Most buyers pick it for deer, black bear and long-range targets.
Howa Fence Line 6.5 Creedmoor Scorched Earth features
Howa’s Fence Line rifles are built for hunters who are hard on gear. Cerakote on the barrel and receiver resists rust and scratches, and the brake on the threaded muzzle takes some bite out of recoil.
The 1500 action is made by Howa Machinery in Japan. It’s a two-lug, push-feed action with a one-piece bolt, and the three-position safety lets you run the bolt on safe so you can unload without firing.
The HACT (Howa Actuator Controlled Trigger) is a two-stage trigger. There’s a light take-up stage, then a crisp break, which makes it easier to shoot well from field positions. The barrel is threaded 1/2×28 at the muzzle and ships with a thread protector, ready for a brake or can. It ships with a muzzle brake installed, which noticeably cuts felt recoil and muzzle rise.
What the 6.5 Creedmoor is good for
Hornady introduced the 6.5 Creedmoor in 2007 as a match cartridge. It caught on with hunters too, and it’s now one of the best-selling rifle rounds in the US. It fires long, high-BC bullets that hold their speed and resist wind, so it’s popular for target shooting from 300 to 1,000 yards. With the right bullet it’s a proven deer and black bear round, and recoil is noticeably lighter than a .308.
Factory loads usually run 120 to 147 grains. The standard 1:8 twist stabilizes the long 140 and 147 grain match bullets as well as lighter hunting bullets. SAAMI sets the industry dimensions for this round; the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard lists them. There’s also a good summary of the history of the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Best 6.5 Creedmoor loads for this rifle
Start with a couple of quality factory loads and see which groups tighter. Once you find it, buy enough of the same lot to get through the season. Hunting loads cost more, but they’re made to expand and hold together on game. Use them in the field and cheaper ammo for practice.
Before the season, check your state’s rules on legal cartridges and hunter education. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a good starting point for public land hunting and state contacts.
Your first range trip
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. The 6.5 Creedmoor really shines past 300 yards, so once you’re zeroed, it’s worth getting time at longer distances and writing down your drops.

Care and storage
Store the Howa Fence Line 6.5 Creedmoor Scorched Earth unloaded, in a dry place, with the magazine out. After rain or snow, dry it off and wipe the metal down before you case it. A clean, lightly oiled bore and tight action screws are most of what keeps a Howa shooting the way it did on day one.
