Description
The Howa Fence Line 350 Legend Scorched Earth is Howa’s Fence Line rifle chambered in .350 Legend, built with a 16.25-inch threaded barrel, a Scorched Earth camo synthetic stock and 5-round capacity. It sells for $627, and it’s in stock. If you want one rifle for deer in straight-wall states, this is a good place to start.
What you get with the Howa Fence Line 350 Legend Scorched Earth
The Fence Line series is the Howa 1500 dressed for the field. The barreled action gets a Cerakote finish, the synthetic stock comes in camo, and the threaded barrel ships with a muzzle brake.
The 1500 action is made by Howa Machinery in Japan. It’s a two-lug, push-feed action with a one-piece bolt, and the three-position safety lets you run the bolt on safe so you can unload without firing.
The HACT (Howa Actuator Controlled Trigger) is a two-stage trigger. There’s a light take-up stage, then a crisp break, which makes it easier to shoot well from field positions. A threaded muzzle (1/2×28) means you can add a muzzle brake or a suppressor later where local law allows. It ships with a muzzle brake installed, which noticeably cuts felt recoil and muzzle rise.
The .350 Legend cartridge
Winchester introduced the .350 Legend in 2019. It’s a straight-walled cartridge, made for states that only allow straight-wall rifle rounds for deer. It’s built for whitetail in places like Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Iowa where rules limit rifle cartridges. Recoil is light and it’s effective inside about 200 yards.
Factory loads use 145 to 180 grain bullets. It’s also cheaper to shoot than most bottlenecked deer rounds. For chamber and pressure specs, see the SAAMI centerfire rifle standard, or read the history of the .350 Legend.

Is this the right rifle for you?
It’s built for ranchers, predator hunters and anyone who keeps a rifle in the truck. The short barrel keeps it handy in vehicles and blinds, and it’s well suited to a suppressor.
Picking ammunition
Start with a couple of quality factory loads and see which groups tighter. Once you find it, buy enough of the same lot to get through the season. When you hunt with it, zero with the exact hunting load you’ll carry, since a different bullet can land an inch or two away at 100 yards.
Hunting rules are set state by state. Start at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hunting page for federal lands, then check your state agency for seasons and caliber limits.
Your first range trip
Bring a solid rest, a few targets and at least two boxes of ammo. Start at 25 yards to get on paper, then move to 100 and make your final adjustments with three-shot groups. Most .350 Legend shooting happens inside 200 yards, so confirm your zero at 50 and 100 and learn where it hits at 150.
